You Need to Go to the Library

Overconsumption, Booktok, and Bookstagram have taught us to feel the need to own all the books we read. I don’t know about you, but I can’t afford to own all the books I read.

To combat overconsumption, the best thing we can do as readers is to use our local libraries more.

The library is more than just a place where you can borrow books. Libraries have movies, music, ebooks, magazines, and all other sorts of media you can use for free. They are spaces that give you access to free internet, community groups, child support programs, and of course, a quiet place to read.

Libraries are instrumental in supporting communities; they act as hubs for social interaction, cultural knowledge, and reputable information. In a world of increasing misinformation, librarians can point you towards finding accurate resources to suit your needs.

Regardless of age, the library promotes lifelong literacy and learning. Many libraries will offer targeted book clubs for children, teens, adults, or seniors looking for community through literature. For writers, some libraries will put on workshops, writing exchange groups, or offer classes.

Libraries don’t just offer literacy related support, though. They also offer help for those seeking employment, computer access, or cultural enrichment. For those who don’t have internet at home, a library card can bridge socioeconomic gaps in a digital age.

Library cards are amazing, let me tell you. Many libraries are partnered with Overdrive, more commonly known as Libby. Libby allows you to utilize you local library…. without ever having to leave your house.

Libby is a free application which lets you enjoy access to ebooks, magazines, and audiobooks through your local library. Libby helps you access the digital assets your library has to offer.

If you’re like me and feel discomforted at purchasing “licenses” for ebooks and audiobooks,–as opposed to actually owning them– then Libby is for you.

By using the resources my library has to offer, I have been able to read and listen to more books than ever before.

Overconsumption, Booktok, and Bookstagram have taught us to feel the need to own all the books we read. I don’t know about you, but I can’t afford to own all the books I read. Nor do I have the space! Some of us want to read like a content creator, but simply don’t have the means to. Using my library keeps costs down and my house uncluttered.

Go to your nearest library, use its resources and pick up a library card. See if you can use Libby and read more books while supporting your local community in the process.

You need to go to the library.
